During meditation or prayer, I would focus on many aspects of inner healing, such as:
- Releasing the past
- Releasing any bindings or agreements
- Cutting cords to others and things
- Dissolving entanglements of energy
- Handing over unhelpful thoughts for correction
Recently, however, it came to me that another very helpful release is one of releasing our perception of the rules and limitations that we apply to all things.
What is a rule or limitation? It is an established base belief in how we see ourselves, anyone or anything. It affects how we see and react to the world around us.
For example, if I see myself as being unattractive, this can impact the way I associate myself with almost everything I do. The layers at which such a thought affects us is so very deep, and this deep penetration of our behavior is unseen by us and often has us wondering why things are as they are, without ever seeing we have done this to ourselves.
In that example, the rule or limitation is that I am unattractive. It’s a belief that is is simply accepted at a base level and is rarely, if ever looked at. Similar rules and limitations could be:
- I can only earn so much
- Life is hard
- People aren’t nice to me
- I don’t understand
- I can’t meditate
- I can’t do anything right
- I have no talents to share
- Nobody cares about me
These are just a few of what can be an almost endless list of thoughts where we establish a rule or limitation on how our world will be experienced. Once that thought is set in place, our lives are seamlessly woven into it, and we don’t see it. We don’t see that we are doing this to ourselves, but we are.
The power in coming to understand this is that if we are just doing these things to ourselves, then we also have the capacity to undo them. The undoing has nothing to do with anything outside ourselves. It’s just up to us. It’s about simply accepting that you really can experience a better life and achieve things more easily than you ever thought you could.
So, while meditating or praying, simply add this to your process. Scan your thoughts for where you feel you are lacking anything, love, finances, acceptance, belonging, etc., and accept the fact that you have somehow created and agreed to having that experience. Now choose to change that base thought and say, “The thought that I am unlovable, I hand over to spirit to correct because I am lovable“, or “The thought that I am unable to provide for myself I hand over to spirit to correct because I can provide for myself“.
As you hand these things over, your guides, higher self or whatever is walking with you, will take this opportunity to help you rewrite how you see yourself. Those statements invite intercession and also provide an openness and willingness on your part to establish a new path, a new thought, a new perception of how you see all things.
I am responsible for what I see. I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide upon the goal I would achieve. And everything that seems to happen to me I ask for, and receive as I have asked.
– A Course in Miracles
The power in that statement is that nobody is a victim if the power to make a change is within themselves. There is nobody to blame and nobody preventing us from making these changes. It is and always has been a choice we can make. It literally is just changing our minds about how we see ourselves and others. The thing here is to see it as a layer you shed, because when you see yourself as being more worthy or more lovable, or more abundant, you are not adding a new rule, you are re-establishing a truth about yourself and shedding the cloud of the previous unhelpful thought.
It’s time to start breaking the rules.
